Why follow a leader? TRUST:

When 10.000 employees were asked - they said they follow leaders mainly when they experience - trust, compassion, stability and hope. The employees did not focus on words like – purpose, wisdom, humour and humility. Employees say they follow leaders that earn trust and show trust. Other values they look for in their leaders are – compassion, stability and hope. (Gallup research). What may it mean when employees say these words? So, what is this «trust». Here are 5 aspects of you create more trust:

1)The Gallup methodology is massive interviews

and listing the words those employees say. Other words near to trust employees used were - honesty, integrity, respect, true, truth, authentic. This describes basic human ethic. Believe in a leader may also be another word linked to trust. When employees have trust – it is also linked to that they have employee engagement in their work. The chances are 1 in 2 - while only 1 in 12 have employee engagement if they lack trust in the organisation’s leadership.

2)Maslow's needs

What employees need of their leaders we may interprete as values, why, goals. Maslow told the needs were: Survive, secure (safe), social belonging (role, status, include), self esteem (respect) - and 5th: self actualisation, unleash talents.

*First people need to experience they survive. That is truth, honesty, authentic, right.

*Security, safety, stability is one of the necessary steps to reach trust. Safe may also mean to be flexible and open to the interests of others. Stabile may mean stabile to be fexible towards your interests. Stabile may also mean to stick to the same argument, practice, procedure every time.

*Include, compassion is a next necessary level to reach trust. Give people a voice. Let all be seen, heard, have fun together.

*Respect is the 4th basic need in order to obtain trust. Respect needs to be mutual, both ways.

Trust is a result of a step by step process through the 4 basic needs/values/goals. It is when these steps are integrated, on line and shining. As you have these 4 - hope is something you may create in the 5th need - as you unleash hope for the future.

3)People’s 7 primary emotions

Another approach is Jaak Panksepp telling uso f people’s 7 primary emotions. They are origin ouf people’s hundreds of different feelings. They are primary emotions that may be shown fysiological and anatomic. They are: seeking, rage, fear, lust, care, grief and play.

People are seeking to avoid pain:

Rage, Fear and Grief. This away from pain, awfulness unpleasant motivation is inherited from the brain of reptiles - fight or freeze or flight.

People are seeking pleasure, means

Lust, Care, Play. Among these, leaders achieve trust especially because they both seek improvements – and care. Care for both their employees, followers - and the results, the future. They need to care in a balanced  wholeness way. For instance to manage to balance the self - and others needs of - survive, secure, include, respect, and 5th: self actualisation, unleash talents.

4)How may a leader create trust faster?

We may help leaders shift brain networks. Where is the brain netrworks is trust happening?

Most time our brain is either focusing or day dreaming.  Either think or feel. The important brain network where leaders balance between think and feel, self and others, care for employees, balance present and future needs – is a wholeness balance brain network (salience network). It is a brain state where you have easy access to other brain networks of think, imagine, primary emotuions – including motivation, pain and pleasure. It is a brain network where both empathy, value weighing, and intuition takes place. If you are stressed or tired it is difficult to get access to this brain network. You need to relax, de-stress in order to observe without judging and defending – what feelings, thoughts, body sensations that flow up in your attention.

5)Neuro-tip:

In order to reach this state of your mind – it is helpful to yawn, stretch super slowly, breath deep, relax – and then observe and let your attention flow in the present situation of your body and mind.
